Trim/Gain not working on Thru mode on iPadOS

NOTE: Please use the search function above before posting to avoid creating duplicate topics.

  • iPad Pro M1 (3rd Gen)
  • Version of operating system (e.g. macOS 14.4.1): iPadOS 26.3.1
  • Version of djay (e.g. 5.1.2): 5.6.1
  • Hardware/controllers used (e.g. Reloop Mixon 8 Pro): Numark Scratch
  • Hardware firmware version (e.g. 1.0.1): Not sure
  • Please consider sharing a short video or screenshots to help clarify your issue

A) SUMMARY OF ISSUE:

  • I want to record audio from external turntable. The only way to enable that is using DVS and then using THRU. However in this mode, the trim/gain knob does nothing.

B) DETAILED STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Enable DVS

  2. Switch to THRU

  3. Keep Numark Scratch in PC mode

  4. Play from external source, trim gain knob does nothing (I can see it move in software)

C) EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • It should control the level of the source. It works as expected on MacBook Pro.

Potential that I’ve just got a setting wrong somewhere, as I’m new to using iPad with a mixer.

Edit: Realised app wasn’t up to date, but updated and same issue

Thanks for the video and setup details @andybarnes.

  1. Please share screenshots of your djay Settings>Audio Devices
  2. Also, your djay Settings>DVS
  3. Also, your djay Settings>Sound

Hey. Screenshots attached… Looks like I added them back to front! I did try turning off auto gain, but thankfully didn’t resolve.

Thanks for the screenshots @andybarnes.

  1. Please try Reset to Defaults in the Audio Devices section
  2. If that doesn’t help, please try enabling Unlink Controller Gain From on-Screen Gain in the Sound Settings

Thanks for the suggestions, @Slak_Jaw . I’ll try those in the morning!

You’re welcome. Sounds good @andybarnes

The reset defaults didn’t do anything. But the disconnect of the gain controller from the on screen worked, thank you!

What does that control actually do? As it seems to lower the volume a lot on the digital tracks when it’s enabled. Does it mean you lose the benefits of auto gain etc?

Would you still consider it a bug considering it behaves differently to MacOS? And do you think it’s iPad or Numark Scratch that is causing it?

I used a Numark scratch/dvs/Ipad mini and I never had any problems! but that was 6 months ago!

Hey. Thanks for that. To be fair, I’ve not had any issues with traditional DVS (control vinly/phase) it’s been the THRU mode, that’s playing the record direct from the turntable stylus.

Great to hear @andybarnes,

This setting basically allows you to tweak the Autogain set by djay, via your hardware without resulting a big jump in volume. With this setting off, when you turn the gain knob on your hardware, djay with jump to the knob position of the hardware. So, if for example, Autogain has turned the gain way to the left of center, and you turn your hardware gain knob from the center position, the gain will immediate jump to the center position.

I’m not 100% sure, and I don’t have access to this hardware to confirm. I’ll pass this onto our hardware team to confirm though.
