Visual waveform jitter on track load & start 5.3.2

Hi again,

I’ve noticed a subtle issue in djay that I wanted to bring to your attention. When I load and immediately start a track, the waveform appears visually unstable or slightly jittery for the first couple of seconds. After that, it stabilizes and plays normally.

At this point, I’m not aware of any impact on the sound — at least I haven’t heard anything unusual. But of course, it’s possible there is also a minor audio effect that’s not immediately noticeable. It might be helpful to test this using a steady signal, like a pure tone or beep, to be certain.

Unfortunately, this behavior isn’t very visible in this video I recorded due to framerate limitations, but I’ve attached a recording to help illustrate the issue. In the video, I point out when the problem is happening and when it stops.

Initially, I suspected it might be related to iCloud being enabled (as that setting recently changed on my side), so I tested with iCloud turned off — but the issue still occurs. Based on that, my current conclusion is that this may be related to the latest version (5.3.2.) of djay, as I hadn’t noticed this behavior in earlier versions.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Thanks for the video and info @DJ_Big_Blender. I’ll share with the team to see what they think.

Hi @DJ_Big_Blender, sorry for the delayed reply. Our engineering team has reviewed your video. It looks like the waveform drawing is slightly jittery until the track is fully analyzed. This is likely a CPU based performance issue due to your older Intel based hardware. We will keep a close eye on this topic to see if other users report similar observations and if so, what hardware they are using.

Not exact same behaviour but close: Jittery waveform Happens only with video-out, does not stop until I stop projecting video. Not related to song-loading.

My definition of “jittery” is that the waveform looks “shaky”, making me feel like I am dizzy and having blurry vision.
I can confirm that my waveform gets jittery as soon as I cast the master video out onto an external display via either HDMI or Thunderbolt USB-C cable. I have an Optoma 4K HDMI projector as well as an LG 4K thunderbolt display - and the jitteriness of the waveform in both happens as soon as I click the “Show” in the “Choose Screen” window circled below.

Jitteriness disappears instantly on clicking the “Unshow” icon on the top-right corner of the master video window (see 2nd arrow)

I tried to do a QuickTime screen recording but somehow it could not capture the correct frame-rate to demo the portion when the waveform is stable.
My videos are 90% 1080p mp4 (H264-MPEG-4 avc part10) and 10% 720p. I have tried some 480p and 360p mp4 files too and kept getting same jittery waveforms, so it is not the file.
Even more interesting is: loading an mp3 track will still jitter for as long as there’s a video being shown out (say a picture show), until i unshow.
I turned off bluetooth, wifi and any running apps - made no difference.

Thanks for sharing @Armigo. I’ve passed this onto our engineering team.

THANKS!
I have managed to make an illustrated video to further explain this - and created a new post here.

as I still think it’s a correctable bug. My mac is powerful enough to do this (it has done well in the past, and handles other apps with ease).
