Vocal (start) detection

Djay Pro displays when the vocal starts in a song.
Goal: Visually see when this vocal starts, when the artist starts singing.
Purpose: Come into action when you need to.
Description: Just like “end of track warning” exists for dj’s to come into action, “vocal start” can also be a feature like that, to call for action by throwing a signal visually (blinking / color line).
And it can also be reversed in the implementation: in stead of signalling where the vocal starts, you could also signal “instrumental free zones”; meaning hilight the sections of a track that have no vocals, so you can safely mix in those zones.

*can be extended to functionalities, for example auto mute vocal stems on outgoing track.

Interesting is that you could argue why not do it with lyrics in stead of detecting a vocal stem. But maybe we are not their yet: maybe running a local algorithm to analyze audio to text for this feature is too much to ask for current hardware. That’s why i’m leaning more towards vocal stem detection. Of course that route immediately gives you the problem when a vocalist is just humming, like the intro of Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness”. That songs has vocals from the start of the song, but you also can’t say she has started singing the lyrics of the first verse..

Thanks for the suggestion @jefuqs. I’ll share this with our devs for consideration. In the meantime, please use the blue Vote button at the top left of this page so we can gauge user demand for this feature. Thanks!

I’m not sure you are advocating this, but I’d quite like the lyrics to be in the waveform too.

Just curious, why? Do you like to sing along? Or do a one man karaoke show?

Well Karaoke is what VirtualDJ is actually doing in their video mode (newest beta version of their app). The why is more: it’s just another ‘data point’ of information that software can deliver to the user, this case the dj that is using software to mix music. To be honest: refinement of the quality of stems, or beatgrid refinement, i’ll take that over any extra new feature. This came from another place in the forum where we were exploring “dream features”. Seeing it’s actually allready in there, we can compare it the virtualDJ’s text being display over the waveform.

It could be used as Karaoke. You could also extend it further and have AI bleeps for swearing.

You could also use it for scratch word interplay stuff.
