Vote Limit - Refresh Votes?

Community Question:

I’ve noticed that I haven’t been able to vote for submitted improvements for months now. I’m guessing I’ve hit the limit for votes—does this reset over time, or am I stuck with my current amount of ZERO votes forever?

Hi @DJ_Big_Blender, the vote limit is 30 for all, but Trust Level 0 users (new users), which have a limit of 2 votes. See below for more info on Trust Levels in Discourse.

The votes are not automatically refreshed unless the topic is Closed or Deleted. You can review all topics that you have voted for in your user Profile>Activity>Votes. Then you manually remove any votes that are no longer important or applicable to you.

Hi @Slak_Jaw,
Thanks for reply.

I think the current 30-vote cap is way too limiting for active and involved users.

The 30-vote cap might have seemed like a good rule of thumb when the community first started, but was it a well-considered decision, or just a random setting? Either way, it’s not working well for active users now.

Why Not?
The current cap doesn’t reflect real-world involvement and contributions. It’s too low for all those ative, long-time users., especially with the number of quality suggestions being submitted. Many suggestions stay open for a looooong time without being implemented, and this penalizes active users who are locked out of voting once they’ve used their votes. It doesn’t make sense to have to delete votes from good suggestions that remain open for years. It just isn’t a real solution.

My Suggestion for Change

It would be great if this vote-system were re-evaluated, and users received new votes periodically, like every month or quarter. This would allow us to continue participating without having to remove votes from older suggestions.

Please consider this.

Hi @DJ_Big_Blender, thanks for the feedback as usual. I will definitely pass this onto the team for further consideration. In the meantime, here’s some more info on this topic.

  1. The current 30-vote cap was not an arbitrary decision but the result of thoughtful evaluation and adjustments over time. It was originally limited to 20 votes at the highest user trust level. Our goal with this limit was to strike a balance between allowing users flexibility in voting while maintaining some scarcity so that each vote holds meaningful value.
  2. If the number of votes were to increase on a monthly or quarterly basis, it would diminish the value of each vote over time, making it harder to gauge genuine community interest. Additionally, the Community platform, Discourse, does not currently support an admin setting or automated way to implement a monthly/quarterly user vote limit increases. Their Topic Voting plugin is designed around a fixed pool of votes per user.
  3. That being said, while votes are one way to express support, they are not the only factor we consider when reviewing feature requests. We also take into account community engagement in the discussion, feature feasibility, resource availability, and alignment with our evolving product vision. We greatly value every user’s input, regardless of the number of votes a suggestion receives. Many users, myself included, have opted to comment things like, “+1 for this idea”, for situations where they want to show support, but also wish to reserve their valuable votes for higher priority features. I hope that helps and thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this topic! I’m looking forward to hearing what other users in the Community think as well.

Hi again @DJ_Big_Blender, I’m happy to report that we have revised the Discourse voting system further. The new numbers are as follows:

  • Trust Level 0 - New | 2 votes
  • Trust Level 1 - Basic | 30 votes
  • Trust Level 2 - Member | 100 votes
  • Trust Level 3 - Regular | 300 votes
  • Trust Level 4 - Leader | 300 votes

In addition, the system will now let you know how many votes you have remaining when your level drops below 100 votes.
