Your question:

Hi, just a general question to the community with regards to effecrs and what people like to use

I’ve recently got back into DJ’ing and exclusively use Djay Pro with a Reloop Mixon 8, put toghether a few mixes of my own now and happy with where I’m at and constantly learning on the job and experimenting, which gets me onto effects

I tend to mix more Disco, 70’s-90’s tunes with a bit of vocal house. I currently have my three dedicated effects set up to Vocal Looper, Snare Gun on Drums and Looper on Hamornies, my 8 dedicated effects are Dub Echo (which I like a lot for transissions) Jet Stream, Loop, Beatmasher, Reverb, Landing, Echo Out and Echo Out (Vocal Only) - see screen grab below

Would just love to gauge the room really in terms of who uses what, how and styles etc for transissions, I’m constantly experimenting with these but do seem to have “settled” on the above listed effects but know there is so much more potential with not only these but the full range available. Purely an open question would just love some of your experiences on what you’re using and when etc

Thanks in advance - Cuzer

The many options are a nice thing, but sometimes less is more. In this respect: keep it simple! I almost only use filters, echo and reverb, similar to what is described here. Otherwise I use Complexer from time to time, but only rarely.

Thanks for sharing @Cuzer. I’m with Chris. I’m a “less is more” kind of DJ when it comes to FX. I mainly use the Filter, Reverb, Echo, and sometimes the Hydrant to build extra tension before drops. Sometimes I’ll use the Bass Gun or Looper for drum fills during less busy parts of the track, but very rarely. Finally, I use Echo Out or Landing from time to time to fill out the end of a transition. Hope that helps!

Thanks both for the replies and link to the video, which I had seen before and is certainly is helpful

I always hear the less is more when it comes to effects and I’m certainly adopting that approach

I’m currently working through a Digital DJ course on transitions and Phil Morse demonstrates the echo and reverb a lot, one thing I notice he does is hit the reverb a beat before killing the track but the stop/outecho is then set to I’d say around 8 bars so the reverb/echo tails off but is audiable
Do you do something similar @Slak_Jaw @Chris_R or do you use the echo out and reverb out in the built in djay Pro software?
Sounds are similar but I guess with the preset effects (on the pads) you can’t extend the duration?
Do you use the start/stop time to influence this? I haven’t really set this up and have generally had the stop at 0 but extending this and I presume that’s what the main out effect setting is in the options menu allows you to produce something similar is this correct?

Also generally I’ve had effects on pre fader, for the likes of echo and reverb etc should they be post fader?

Thanks as always

You’re welcome @Cuzer. That all really depends on the situation. Sometimes I use the Manual FX Echo Out+ when I want more control and sometimes I use the Instant FX Echo Out 1 when I want to quickly apply the echo. I also sometimes use the Stop Time set to 0.7 Seconds and use the Play/Pause button. Mostly I mix it up from time to time based on the situation - I don’t have a set formula or strict rules for this. I don’t personally use the Main Out Effects. I use Post Fader FX. This is essential if you want your Echo and Reverb tails to continue on after you close the Channel Faders or move the Crossfader to the opposite side. I hope that helps!

Everyone certainly has different ideas and their own style. And perhaps it’s also a fundamental question of what it’s actually about. My contribution referred to the use of manual effects. I also use Instant FX, but that’s not what I think of when someone asks what effects you use.

I generally use the Instant FX for short accents, sometimes just for one beat, sometimes longer. For me, this also includes Vinyl Stop. There is a variant with one beat. If you use the start/stop button, it depends on the time that is set, and that doesn’t always match the tempo of the track that is currently playing. That’s why I rarely use it, but have set it to 0.6 seconds, simply out of habit, because the Technics 1210s need this time to stop.

In the end, you shouldn’t just go by what others do. Of course, this can vary greatly depending on the style of music and your own taste. Just try not to overdo it with the effects. Not everything that works goes down well with the audience
