having pretty much the same issue on a new imac with big sur 11.2.3. and external audio device babyface pro fs and the built in headphone jack. driving me really crazy because i have a lot of music podcasts to do in the days to come.

Could you please tell us what audio devices you have connected to your Mac?
Did this not happen to you on previous macOS versions?
Are you getting the distortion on the pre-cueing, on the master output or on both?
