Extra 4dB on Headphone volume vs main volume

  • Device model (e.g. 2018 iPad Pro):
  • Version of operating system (e.g. iOS 18.3.1):
  • Version of djay (e.g. 5.2.9):
  • Hardware/controllers used (e.g. X96):

Summary of the issue:
Pre-cue volume not work as should be. On incoming pre-cue signal has an extra 4dB on headphones output, which is too loud, and make distortion. Even if Cue volume is turned down to minimum position.

How to reproduce the issue:
check the video capture

Cue volume turned down to minimum position

Very hard to say something, 3 years will come up to me, I have been subscribed to DJay Pro, and I’m still not able to use normally. Issues are not fixed after years and months! But Bluetooth controller feature was very important! I’m afraid from that Djay Pro will turn to DJay Toy soon! The standard feature should be work as charm, once it have established, then, should focus to features! So simple!

DropBox

without sound because YT blocked

So… X96 has gain knobs for each channel

Have you tried to find the sweet spot, when it’s not redlining?
Turn those knobs to 9 o’clock first.
That I would use to get the volume down first.

As it looks like all of your channelss are on “blue” distorting already.

Maybe this is the thing as I don’t like to use the track preview like you do.
As it’s not so user friendly on macOS to select track, preview, close the preview window.
I always load songs to deck to preview the track.

@dj_romy_fi Thanks for your advice, but it seem you didn’t got the point. Believe me I have used many mixers :)) I know the trim/gains how work. Blue mean not distorting, that +6dB thats very fine, only red clip mean +10db, that is not ok for output.
Agree, how preview works on DJay, that is not user-friendly, I hope they come up with new way for instead of bluetooth features.

Hi @DJ-Z, I see what you mean regarding the headphone volume when using the Preview function. Can you please confirm if the headphone volume is lower when using the the regular headphone cue for each channel by loading the song to a deck rather than playing it with Preview? Thanks!

EDIT: can you please also share a screenshot of your djay Settings>Audio Devices page? I believe this may have something to do with External Mixer Mode. I tested it with a Mixtour Pro and Internal Mixer Mode and the headphone volume seems to be the same whether I use Preview or the Channel Cue.

HI, @Slak_Jaw

only incoming preview signal is distorted/overloading from DJay as routed to to my 11-12!
Regarding your belief, that’s wrong  but nothing wrong at end of my settings.

Very note that (above), in pre-cueing section that 2 volume slider is DOWN, but djay sending signal on close maximum to 11-12., but shouldn’t.

Thanks for the additional details and confirmation @DJ-Z. This is helpful. I’ve passed it along to the engineering team to see if they can replicate this and offer any suggestions.

@Slak_Jaw noted that? 2 volume slider has pulled down, but still there is audio signal! For better understanding, when you turning your volume down, you not hear any sound from your speaker, right?

Correct @DJ-Z. When I turn the Pre-Cueing volume slider down in the djay Settings it turns down the volume of my headphones. This works both when using the Channel Cue and the Preview. However, I am using a Reloop Mixtour Pro and Reloop Ready. They are both Internal Mixer devices. I do not have access to an External Mixer device to check. So, I’m guessing your issue is related to that.

Sorry I misunderstood that, I have tried it now, same loud (+4dB, distortion ) on both, preview and regular headphone cue, once song have loaded to deck.

Okay, thanks for the correction @DJ-Z.

Can you adjust the headphone gain on your mixer to reduce the level by 4db?

that can’t fix the distortion @Slak_Jaw, just -4dB quieter with. Issues in Djay side.

Thanks for checking @DJ-Z. Okay, we’ll have to wait until Monday for the hardware team to check this on an External Mixer device. I’ll let you know when I hear back.

@DJ-Z if you don’t want to wait until tomorrow, we could try the following:

Please disconnect your iPad from your mixer, close djay and follow the procedure below to perform a Forced Restart of your iPad: Force restart iPad - Apple Support

I did it @Slak_Jaw, but issue still same as before.

Okay thanks for checking @DJ-Z .

You could try a fresh djay installation to see if that clears up the issue. I suggest that you backup your djay Media Library database and any custom MIDI mappings, then uninstall djay, reboot your device, and reinstall the latest version of djay.

You can find the files above in the following location on iOS: using the Files App, navigate to Locations->On My iPhone/iPad->djay->User Data

Copy the files to a new location or external drive before uninstalling djay. After reinstallation, you can simply copy these files back to their original locations to maintain your Hot Cues, Saved Loops, My Collection Playlists, History and Queue.

I’ll do, but now I gotta go to take a health 90min walk :)) at my age I need that. Then I get back to here with the result, but I’m afraid from that will not fix this issue I’m sure in 100%.

Okay, sounds good @DJ-Z. Enjoy your walk!

@Slak_Jaw, unfortunately I was right, we didn’t got any luck in this case…

Okay, thanks for checking and confirming @DJ-Z

Hi again @DJ-Z, sorry for the delayed response. I spoke with engineering and they were able to reproduce this on their end. This is what they explained is happening:

  • When playing the song on a deck, auto gain attenuates the deck volume. However, the pre-cueing playback is always at the original track volume. That’s where the roughly +4dB difference comes from.
  • As your example is a modern song, it is mastered for maximum loudness so that the loudest peaks will just touch clipping, so it’s not surprising we see the red LED flicker.

To fix this they suggested you go to the djay Settings>Sound and set the Output Headroom to -9dB, which is a more healthy level for the Xone:96. I hope that helps!
