The Hercules DJControl Mix Ultra is a DJ controller for streaming audio with no cables for a 100% nomadic DJing experience.
This audio output device uses no cabling for inbound or outbound data transfer or for power connection. Paired wirelessly via Bluetooth 4.0, the device networks with iOS/Android smartphone/tablets for music input, wireless speakers for output, and is fully powered by a built-in battery.
The entirely wireless functionality of the DJControl Mix Ultra is a first in the DJ Controller category.
Interesting, as someone who has the Hercules dj control mix I will be looking out for this. Hercules is usually pretty good on their pricing. I will need to see the full product but it could be promising I think.
I did see one review saying it would be released “later this month”. The audio latency from Bluetooth may be an issue though, other than for very basic playback.
Hercules itself specifies January 23 as the release date. Otherwise, I am also skeptical about the latency. For “very basic playback”, however, I would probably do without a controller altogether, especially in conjunction with an iPad or iPhone, where you can already work pretty well with the touchscreen.
This is not a problem and at first glance the way I would choose. And if it’s only about the controller functionality, low latency isn’t even absolutely necessary.
Just reading the Digital DJ Tips review, it seems the Bluetooth latency isn’t the only negative. Because the unit has no audio I/O at all, everything depends on the phone/tablet - which of course only has a single stereo output.
Ergo, no cueing unless you use a mono splitter cable, so both your cue and the main output would be in mono - and it’s not wireless any more.
There are many situations where it would be great to be able to work without cables. In practice, of course, it’s not that easy. But that’s not the fault of this controller, so you could say that the idea is quite innovative. The problems in implementation actually lie with other components, but as long as these are not solved, the best innovative idea is of no practical benefit.
But perhaps we are already on the right track, because almost a year ago AlphaTheta presented the WAVE-EIGHT, a loudspeaker that can be used wirelessly and is said to have extremely low latency WAVE-EIGHT - 8" portable DJ speaker with SonicLink | AlphaTheta). I can’t say how well this really works in practice, but with a bit of luck the problems mentioned above are no longer completely unsolvable.
The ridiculous thing with SonicLink is that the WAVE-EIGHT system is not compatible with the system of the same name used by their wireless headphones and the XDJ-AZ…
Got these patch notes yesterday on my iPhone and today on my Mac. Looks like the bluetooth MIDI is the way too go with (probably) a mono split cable from the phone. Also seeing some instagram posts about combining it with the Meta Quest
