Manual sync to iOS - and relinking files

Apologies if this is already asked - I have really tried to understand this topic and read an enormous amount about it on the forums but I just keep going round in circles

I want to be able to manage my hotcues, loops and playlists on either my iPhone or my Mac and have them work on the other device.

I don’t want to use the music app as I use it for other things and I find it a really cumbersome process. I just want to work within Djay and not any other software.

One library is great, but it only goes one way. I want to go both ways

My hotcues are updating fine across my iOS and Mac device through iCloud - I don’t need to change this part.

Regarding playlists, I know I can use the manual process of copying over the Djay Media library file.

This works perfectly iOS → Mac, and I can just relink all the files to the new folder when loading into Mac.

However I understand on iOS there is no relink functionality, so even though all my files are in one folder, I don’t understand how I am supposed to move my library from Mac to iOS. The playlists work but all the tunes are greyed out.

Is there any way at all, without using external software to just be able to edit playlists in iOS and on Mac and be able to sync reliably to the other device?

Algoriddim - honestly this is the most beautifully designed software but this part so desperately needs fixing - this would really make Djay the rekordbox killer..

Thanks!

YOUR QUESTION:

Hi @Tony123, you could try the following process:

Using the native “My Collection” library source in combination with the Finder (on macOS), Files (on iOS), or Explorer (on Windows) library sources.

To get started:

  1. In the Finder/Files/Explorer source , use the “+” icon to select the files or folders you’d like to make available in djay.
  2. Create a playlist within “My Collection” where you’d like these tracks to live.
  3. Drag and drop your selected tracks from the Finder/Files/Explorer source into your new playlist in “My Collection.”

“My Collection” allows you to create custom playlists and folders that automatically index tracks from various sources within djay, including streaming services, djay Music, locally stored files, and files from external devices/locations.

A byproduct of this approach is that it lets you work directly with your file sources, bypassing the need to use the Music app altogether. Since djay links to your files rather than importing them, it’s essential to ensure that your file paths remain consistent.

It is also important to note that if you add new tracks to a source folder (like an external drive), those files will appear in the Finder/Files/Explorer source within djay. However, they won’t automatically show up in your custom playlists in “My Collection” as you’ll need to manually drag them into the appropriate playlist to keep everything in sync.

Hi there,

I think this is exactly what I’m doing, but want to check

This is what I did.

  • I have set up a folder that I keep in sync across iOS and Mac (I use Syncthing for this). I keep ll my music tracks in this folder
  • I have added all my files to an “all tracks” playlist on djay on Mac in exactly the way you describe (selected them all and pressed “ add to all tracks playlist”
  • I have then set up new playlists for some of my tracks to organise them
  • If I ever add new files, I add them to my “all tracks” playlist

This all works fine, and I can do this both on iOS and on Mac.

However, If I edit the playlists on iOS and transfer the djay library file from iOS to Mac, the library transfers over perfectly - as even though all the files are initially greyed out, I can then do “relink files” and choose the Mac folder where my tunes are.

But it doesn’t work the other way around, as there is no relink option.

What do I do in this scenario?

Hi @Tony123, unfortunately, there is no relink option available on iOS. This is why using the Music/iTunes App is usually the better way to go.

We do have a suggestion topic for adding a relink option to iOS if you’d like to go upvote it: Relink for iOS & Android

Thanks, that’s very clear.

I do find it confusing that there’s quite a bit of instruction around transferring the library file to iOS when it doesn’t actually work in practice (due to this relinking issue) but hey ho

here’s crossing fingers this all gets fixed up sometime, it really wokld be wonderful to be able to just work multi device.

You’re welcome @Tony123
