Hardware/controllers used (e.g. Reloop Mixon 8 Pro): presently Mixtour Pro
Your question:
I’m very interested in getting the correct controller for DJ, been using a Mixtour Pro at home, but would like get something with more pad controls for gigging.
I’m basically an open-format, ‘live remixer’ DJ type; I use VDJ and a Roland DJ-505 or NI Kontrol S8, so I do a lot of looping and stem fx stuff, though I realised if I could use Djay Pro, and could have more flexibility due to the beatgrid technology - Been using the Looper Matrix and Sampler at home.
My question is:
If I get a Mixon 8 Pro (or any other controller), can a get cue routing from the sampler and looper? I can’t seem to find any form of pre-cueing for either on the Mixtour, everything seems to come the main outputs directly. I’m aware you can assign the volume, and I think maybe using external mode on other devices, it can go to an output. Does this external setting have any disadvantages? - I have assumed the Mixon 8 Pro is the most versatile for Djay Pro
My idea is; use the pads and sequencer to create ‘reinforcement’ drums patterns in cue, then bring up levels to match the tunes playing. I would like to use the Looper but it seems you can’t have user-created loops, and you can’t interchange the ones present…I don’t think there’s been any new one for a very long time?
Can I do this?
Here’s an example (but I’ll be using only a controller and less iPad)
P.S. I’m aware off midi mapping, but the DJ-505 isn’t class complaint, so looking at similar, or better, specifically for Sampler and Looper functionality.
Please note the pre-cueing of the Looper and Sampler outputs is not currently supported on any hardware. There is an existing suggestion topic for this that you can upvote though: Looper & Sampler Pre-Cueing & Audio Routing Options
This is correct. You cannot currently add your own loops to the Looper or customize the existing packs. Please note that the functionality of the Looper is much more complicated than it seems under the hood. So, while supporting custom loops seems trivial on the surface this is much more complex to implement effectively. There is also an existing suggestion topic for this that you can upvote: Custom Looper packs
Just to clarify; even if it is in external mode with the sample output to a track fader (4-channel controller), this won’t be heard on a cue post fade, any device?
Also, is this anyway to auto-preview? e.g do I have to activate the preview play button on each track, every time? in VDJ, you can set a time position, so you don’t have to wait for an intro, etc
Update - just click that link, it’s your feature request, from 5 years ago?
If you have a proper External Mixer Mode device, like the RANE Four or Performer for example, then yes, you could route the Looper or Sampler to one of the deck channels and use the headphone pre-cueing on that channel.
a. However, please note that the Reloop Mixon 8 Pro is an Internal Mixer Mode device so this won’t work with that hardware.
b. Also note that the RANE Four and Performer are not supported on iOS so you will need to use a macOS or Windows device.
c. Currently the only 4 Channel, External Mixer Mode, DJ controllers that are supported on iOS are the Pioneer DDJ-1000SRT and DDJ-SZ.
d. Alternatively, if you’re interested in a Mixer instead of DJ Controller, the Pioneer DJM-900NXS2, DJM-A9, DJM-S9, Reloop Elite, Reloop RMX95 are supported on iOS.
There is no auto-preview option in djay. You can skip ahead once in the preview, but there is no way to set a time position to skip the intro, etc.
Yes, that is my feature request. I was an active member of this community long before I joined the Algoriddim team in 2023.
So Mixon 8 Pro is the most compatible controller for Djay Pro, and nothing will do it on iOS?
It’s a shame, I really want to move over to Djay Pro, for the sampler and beatgrid combination…Maybe I can stick with Mixtour Pro and use a Novation Launch Kontrol Mk3 for the sampler and Neural Mixing parts instead.
Coincidentally; I was similar on Akai prior to joining them
Hi again @NiceThings, I made some additional edits to my post above. As noted, the Mixon 8 Pro is an internal mixer mode device so pre-cueing the Looper in the headphones is not supported. Same with the Mixtour Pro.
