C’mon Algoriddim, give us a bone! Tell us you’ve spoken to Apple about this and that, at the very least, they’re aware of the problem.
I also updated to 8.1.1 and tried again with my little generic USB. Same issue.
From the @algoriddim twitter account, as a response to my tweet:
“We already responded a while back that this is a system issue and there is nothing we can do about it at this time.”
In response to Waveycrazey, I noticed this issue originally with both a USB-powered generic sound card and an Fiio E07K. Neither worked properly.
I would test the E07K again, but sold it soon thereafter. The USB sound card continues to have issues in djay and Traktor DJ. My Vestax Spin2 seems to work properly, but my NI Z1 has issues in Traktor DJ with headphone cue switching when using the crossfader.
This is an iOS issue, but I’ve seen little or anything from Algoriddim, NI, and especially Apple, about if/when this will be resolved.
Just tested with my generic USB sound card and CCK on Air with 8.2.
Same unfortunate results.
What gives? Does Apple not care, and Algoriddim is content to have dissatisfied customers?
I tried again with with my small, generic USB sound card (stereo out, mono mic) using a CCK cable on an iPad Air 128GB (WiFi) using djay 2.7.5 on iOS 8.3.
I get stereo output from the headphone jack, whether it’s main output or cue, and no sound from the USB sound card under any circumstances when the headphone port is in use.
Does the Zalman device work well on iPad without an external, powered USB hub? Even if not, it looks like a solid device at the price.
Perhaps this in the specifications can help others find devices that will work, because this is a very low power draw:
Power consumption: minimum 3.3V, 150mA (Standard 5V, 500mA)
I’ve ordered one to test on my iPad Air (wifi 128GB) and 6S Plus (128GB)
I got the Zalman ZM-RSSC today and tried it with the following configuration:
iPad Air 128GB Wifi, iOS 9.3.1 and djay 2.8.1
The volume controls on the Zalman, when connected via the CCK, don’t seem to work. The output is a bit noisy, but with more power than the headphone jack.
Pre-cueing works, as tested with the Zalman on the CCK and another set of earbuds on the iPad audio jack. Hooray!
The ZM-RSSC does present itself as a three-channel device, as it’s a 5.1 processor. This means that four options are available in split cueing.
Success, for cheap.
Thanks for the feedback. It’s not perfect, but it’s a solution with a reasonable price tag.
I’ve suggested that Algoriddim also look into adding support for the $9 Apple Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter for use as a second output.
I tested it yesterday and it’s currently either the adapter, when it’s plugged in, or back to the headphone jack, when that’s plugged in, on an iPad Air, iOS 10.0.2.
If they can make this work, that’s a very good DAC, which is cheap, requiring no CCK, that you can get in any Apple Store or Best Buy, among others.
For pre-cueing apps like djay are juggling between two different outputs, like the built-in headphone jack and an external USB sound card. This lets me play music out of both, simultaneously.
This new Apple adapter could work the same, but probably just needs a few lines of code to be a valid “second” output device and available for pre-cueing in djay.
The Lightning to minijack has a DAC within the cable itself. It does NOT share the DAC with the 3.5mm on the iPad. This is why it’s a possibility.
We’ve technically found that this isn’t an issue with _some_ adapters. Many of us have purchased other adapters/usb sound cards (like the Zalman above) which work perfectly on iOS 8, 9, and 10.
The problem is the amount of power the devices draw, from what we’ve been able to determine. A brand new, small, efficient DAC from Apple is likely to work.
I did this no less than 4 times, on four different days, during the first week of August.
iPad Air with a CCK and the Zalman card. Sennheiser headphones on the headphone jack, to mixer with the Zalman.
Pre-cued just fine, and played stereo out with very good output volume on the Zalman.
If you’d like, I can make a video showing this setup in djay 2.8.4
Yes indeed, and it worked just great in iOS9 on many occasions. I hadn’t thought about it and iOS 10, and it seems the behavior has changed (again)
In iOS 10.0.2 on an iPad Air and 10.1 PB1 on a 6S Plus, when the USB card is connected, the headphone jack is muted. It still shows up on both as a valid output for Main or Cue. Very strange. Turning the volume up has no effect.
Cue still does work on the Zalman, because it’s got multiple outputs, but this issue kneecaps those using a single stereo output device. I’d like to do some more testing with a powered USB hub and a Cakewalk USB device to see how it acts.
I reiterate that I have used a similar setup, headphones as cue, and USB as output, in iOS 9 and iOS versions before 8. This is a thing, not some delusion, and I’m genuinely stumped as to why it works so inconsistently.
As the OP for this thread, I continue to be frustrated at the nearly-complete lack of input from Algoriddim. If a representative would simply pop in and say that they’re working on it, they’re aware of it and can reproduce it, or that Apple is in control and we’re all SOL, that would be FINE. It would be input.
Meanwhile we futz with things and are at the mercy of Apple and Algoriddim’s silence. I can only hope that this gets resolved in a forthcoming update.
…and I wish I could find a picture of my setup from this August, but none of them show this clearly. Oh well.
Algoriddim requested that I email them about this after bringing it up on Twitter. I’ll see how this goes.
From Algoriddim:
"So right now we are experiencing some issues with pre cueing and Apples iOS 10.
We already opened a case on this issue and trying to repair this.
We kindly ask for a little bit more patience."
I have no update to share, having not heard back from Algoriddim about this matter. I’m awaiting iOS 10.2 for another try, though I could just as well try on my iPhone running one of the Public Betas, but I’d prefer to offer an update based on an official build of iOS.
