Please Allow Spotify OFFLINE

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Spotify OFFLINE ASAP!.

The D Jay 2 software with Spotify integration has been one of the best things that has happened to my DJ’ing. But without having access to the files offline it is too unreliable. I bring a wireless hotspot with me to gigs but the data usage can be heavy and last weekend I was somewhere with bad service and it through off my game.

Please figure out a way to add this feature, with it the software would function on a much more professional level, thank you!

off line is a must plz sort asap

can DJay plz update us on this

yes… update please. And not just offline… offline in HQ.

I just received this email…

Warren (Official Rep) commented on a reply to this idea:
Please Allow Spotify OFFLINE
(1) djay and Spotify are 3rd party apps, where as iTunes and the Music app are developed by Apple and belong to the system. As an integral part of the system, iTunes (Music app), can offer a system-wide API for other apps to access the music content on your device.

(2) The songs you download from Spotify are most likely in a proprietary and encrypted format that only the Spotify app can read.

We understand and fully agree that adding support for offline songs would be a great improvement. But please note that we can only add things that are possible, and that just isn’t the case at the moment.

We also investigated if the new features in iOS 8 would offer any possible solutions to this, but unfortunately none of the new features can be applied/used to solve this.

Hi Warren,

thanks for your reply.

May I ask how the Ogg Vorbis files are transportable as offline on a Macbook, but not on an iPad?

As far as Spotify are concerned, this is an almost certain guarantee of subscription fees for all DJay 2 users, and as far as any iPad users who are thinking of making the move are concerned, it must hugely increase traffic on the Djay 2?

Also, I am aware that iTunes interacts with Spotify, is that the way “Offline” is stored on a Macbook? I understand that the files Spotify stream are never owned, but rented.

Would there be scope to bridge iTunes on the iPad to Spotify, or put another way, is it Spotify and iTunes who hold the key to resolving this issue?

You know, I bought an iPad today because of the djay spotify connection. And imagine my surprise when I could not mark files as offline ?

Seriously - how can you not mention the ONLINE ONLY support ?

I get it, Apple and Spotify, and the right holder does not really want to play ball.
But that doesn’t excuse you from not being very very clear about this crucial, and for me devastating limitation. I bought a device for several hundred dollars, which is mor or less unusable, as pauses in music isn’t really acceptable in any venus, no matter how small.

Neither offline, or online is even mentioned at your product page, only Spotify Premium accounts. Of which the main feature is, offline listening.

I more than a little disappointed.

Dear Warren, dear COO’s and CTO’s from algoriddim,

please take that problem seriously and don’t let an employee give the answer to this topic. It is necessary, that djay 2 will work in offline-mode also - like the spotify-app does. Therefor

you have to solve the problem together with spotify.

Your customers are waiting!
Please remember, it’s not only a game - you get money for this!

yours sincerely Olli

I updated to Djay 2 thinking I’d really get to play my offline music on little small gigs. I don’t get it! At the end of the day everybody is making money. The artist, Apple because people can only use this on and iPhone or iPad, Spotify is getting $ from premium prescriptions + Apple charges to make apps for sale on App Store, and of course Algorriddim is making money from people buying the app. Very cool app but something like this will make customers protest both spotify and Djay. Warren and company need to get it together before I start a petition and send it to corporate. ASAP

Not really. For those of a technical persuasion, you can read about iOS 8.0 “app extensions”.

https://developer.apple.com/library/i…

As Warren (official rep) mentions earlier, Apple iOS “sandboxes” each application. Think of it as each application being a train running on it’s own track, where the data for the app are passengers on the train. Each passenger can see other passengers on the train but not passengers on any other train, because the “track” is not shared.

Apple released extensions to help with sharing certain functionality, but not “app to app” communication (train to train via the shared track).

In short, this isn’t Spotify’s fault. It’s a design criteria from Apple which is based on security.

Not all apps are extensible. Don’t hold your breath for this.

Because Apple provide a way of being able to provide (and control) access to the “iPod” Library - which is essentially a mechanism for accessing the content stored locally. Same way that other apps (like facebook or twitter) can access your camera roll. https://developer.apple.com/library/i…

The difference with iTunes is that Apple control the APIs to it and provide that as one of a number of “things” than can be accessed by other apps (including Camera Roll etc). Technically, it’s not the same as what’s being asked by having two different apps talk to each other. While it may be technically possible, it’s not altogether common practice, so, even though it may seem “simple”, the sandboxing isn’t really “just an excuse”.

I think the issue here is that for the “online” integration, Spotify have probably made their Web API (https://developer.spotify.com/web-api…) available to the Algoriddim developers (seems to be freely available to anyone that wants to make an app, in actual fact). That makes it really easily to “fetch and manipulate” Spotify content. This is the same with my Sonos app, which integrates Spotify in exactly the same way Djay does. The BIG difference in what folks are asking for is that this would be an app-to-app solution. The Djay app would need access to the offline Spotify content. It seems that this is a bigger issue than “just” iPad. Algoriddim just released DJ Pro for Mac which looks really neat, but also has the same “problem” - i.e. no offline access to Spotify’s content. I am starting to believe this is partly intellectual property / copyright and partly technical. Perhaps the same root reasons that we can’t record sets through Djay that have streamed Spotify content…sigh.

Surly if spotify aloud this feature for their premium members then it would make free members want to join spotify’s premium service making it More profitable for spotify? As premium members have the capability to save offline surly some sort of acceptation sould be made for a partnership app?

come on guys, offline playlists now, for god sake

The quality is inferior, if not 96kbps is something close to it.

Hey, I agreed with every comment. As Premium users we have the right to at least expand the offline features of Spotify to sponsored apps like DJAY. I am sure it is possible to develop a security software that protects Spotify and DJay and allows this feature. Thanks and please update or you will lose thousands of users.

I have just brought the Reloop Beatpad and absolutely gutted that I can’t play my offline Spotify tracks sooooooooo disappointed, come on guys sort this one pleeeeeeeease!!!
