First time ever experiencing an audio glitch like this. Experience has been pretty smooth so far.
Was using the iPad to remotely control a digital mixer (Behringer XR18) using their native X-Air app. Was connected by WiFi through router dedicated to being an access point to the digital mixer. Bluetooth off. No controller connected, only Split-Cue cable to a powered speaker. Songs sourced from USB-C stick.
Switching back and forth to Djay worked for a couple songs. But after that, the track playing kept getting stuck in the middle of a song and repeating a 4 bar section over and over again (track still continued normally though). Even after restarting both apps. Closing the X-Air app and not starting back up returned Djay back to normal.
fyi: The 2018 iPad Pro 11 (Gen 1) has 4 GB of RAM. Unsure how iPadOS uses that RAM against the OS processes and the two apps running.
Does that repeating glitch seem like an out of memory issue? Was it really the multi-tasking both apps that caused the problem? I feel like I’ve multi-tasked before, even during gigs doing things like searching information and searching on Apple Music. But admittedly, nothing like having a digital mixer app constantly transmitting information back and forth.
Thanks, @Slak_Jaw . I’ll try my best to see if I can provide this soon.
Meanwhile, question: Does this sound like a out of memory issue?
I’m trying to make a decision if it is time for a hardware upgrade. I haven’t felt this need because before this, my entire experience with Djay on this iPad Pro has been rock solid.
Another question: Approximately how much memory does Djay use on iOS? I get that people have been and are using the app on much older or less capable iPads than I am using. But I’m just wondering if there is a recommendation to run Djay today on current hardware when trying to multi-task on common apps and usage scenarios while DJing (DMX/lighting control, mixer control, streaming music outside of DJay, searching song information, etc).
Last question: Are there any recommended things to do to ensure multi-tasking on an iPad is as good as it can be? By default, apps traditionally running in the background eventually get suspended. But there is multi-tasking “side by side” and “Stage Manager”. And iPadOS 26 changed the way multi-tasking works with additional developer and user capabilities. Just wondering if Djay implemented any of these changes in their iOS / iPadOS versions?
And I do understand that it probably isn’t highly recommended to be doing much of anything on any computer you are using while using Djay and DJ’ing. And I would never prioritize any activities or apps above it in critical situations. But it would be great to be able to multi-task when needed.
Hi @zrevs1, this does potentially sound like a hardware performance related issue. Normally, I would not recommend using any other apps while DJing. Especially on older hardware.
I put together the following personal iOS recommendations a few years ago. I think most of these are still valid.
Having said that, the culprit could be your WiFi network load. Your dedicated router/access point for the Behringer X-Air app was handling constant bidirectional data (mixer control, metering, etc.), which can saturate the WiFi band (especially if it’s 2.4GHz or shared with other devices). iPadOS prioritizes real-time audio apps like djay, but heavy network I/O from X-Air could have lead to the issue. The fact that closing X-Air resolved it immediately points to this—it’s not uncommon in pro audio setups where apps compete for CPU cycles or network stack resources.
Thank you for the detailed reply. I had read those tips and even saved them as I thought they were and are valuable advice.
Especially on older hardware.
I’m always kinda shocked being reminded that my iPad Pro is already 7 years old from release. I guess because it’s just still so capable. I may have gotten it a year or two after release and didn’t use it heavily until the last 2-3 years. It’s handled photo editing, 3D design, remote PS gaming, live sound mixing control, streaming backup to my DJ gear, and anything else I’ve thrown at it like the Pro model that it is with no problems. I’ve read that the A12X chip processor inside it is still pretty comparable to the lowest model iPad these days which is the A16. Though the A16 has 6GB of RAM which would help. Maybe if I split duties to both of those (with Djay on the A16), I’ll keep on being happy with Djay performance as I have always been since fully switching to it.
Still working on capturing that glitch. Sorry, been busy, will try and follow up.
